Perhaps during this season of harvest and thanksgiving we should think a little less about ourselves and a bit more of others. During this month's newsletter we would like to highlight a wonderful organization, the Seoul International Women’s Association, which has been doing a lot of charity work for the last 30 years.
The Seoul International Women’s Association (SIWA) together with the diplomatic community has hosted a fundraising bazaar for 30 years, raising 260 million KRW in 2008 alone. This year the bazaar will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at the Grand Hilton Hotel and will be one of the largest annual fundraising events in Korea , at which business people will also have the opportunity to network with the international and diplomatic community in Seoul. read on

The SIWA and Diplomatic Community Bazaar is an opportunity to demonstrate the rich mix of cultures that reside in Seoul by sharing cultural traditions and selling products to raise much-needed money for charity. With over 500 members, including the diplomatic community, SIWA has the widest reach among expatriates in Seoul. The bazaar, which is one of the most popular and largest fundraising events in Seoul, draws over 4,000 people. A Gala Dinner with dancing and silent auction will be held on a Saturday evening in March 2010 to maximize sponsor exposure to company executives..
SIWA and Diplomatic Community Bazaar 2009 Needs Sponsors
As a volunteer non-profit organization, SIWA distributes the entire proceeds of the bazaar to over 40 South Korean charities. These charities work with orphans, the elderly, broken families, abuse sufferers and many other deserving people. Most require basic necessities such as food and fuel. SIWA’s welfare organization has maintained consistent and continuous assistance to these charities over the years. However, due to the recent economic crisis, we are seeing an increase in requests from charities at the same time that donations from sponsors have contracted. Nevertheless we will work harder to meet the needs of the less fortunate.
SIWA is seeking sponsors for this year’s bazaar. Bazaar sponsors have a great opportunity to gain brand exposure by being associated with SIWA and the larger diplomatic community. Benefits include instant recognition with 85 Heads-of-Mission, 500 top executives and their spouses in multinational corporations in Korea, as well as exposure to all the guests at the bazaar. Media attention through our public relations campaign will target Korean and English language outlets in print, magazines, web and television. Sponsorship opportunities range from large donations of cash or products, to individual items or vouchers for meals or services. Vendor tables are also available.

What is SIWA?
The Seoul International Women’s Association (SIWA) was created in 1962 by a small group of women of different nationalities to enhance expatriate life in South Korea, as well as to support those who are in need in this country. From that small group, membership peaked at 1,000 women from 80 different countries, including Korea.
SIWA organizes many activities to serve the various interests of its members. At monthly Coffee Mornings members share friendship and enjoy presentations on a variety of topics. At newcomers’ meetings long-time residents share their knowledge with new arrivals. To enhance the expatriate life, SIWA extends to its members the opportunity to experience new skills and activities and discover Korea. Enrichment classes offer a wide range of activities from language instruction, handicrafts and cooking, to cultural sessions about the host country. SIWA organizes tours to museums, art galleries, markets, festivals and other places of interest in and out of Seoul. All members receive Discovery magazine which lists all SIWA activities.
SIWA’s dedication to help those in need in Korea is exemplified by the SIWA Welfare Committee which receives numerous requests for donations, discusses if they are appropriate, and makes sure the money is spent only for the purpose for which it was intended. All of this is possible thanks to two major SIWA fundraising events: the annual SIWA and Diplomatic Community Bazaar and Gala Evening. Since 1978, these popular events have become widely recognized.
For more than 40 years now, SIWA has been a place where women from all over the world meet, find friends, share knowledge, culture and interests while helping others. SIWA is still purely a non-profit, volunteer-run organization and depends on the support and work of its members and sponsors.
