Steve McKinney is a Certified Master Coach and he along with other qualified associates use behavioral based and scientifically developed tools in coaching executives and businesses to excellence and success. In addition, Steve is a member of the International Coaching Council.

It is generally agreed that our world is changing rapidly. People at all levels in business and other organizations are being required to change. Leadership failure rates have been quite high and with the increasing mergers and acquisitions these numbers will no doubt get even higher.

Recognition of great leaders in this changing world is ever present. The need for continual improvement is also prevalent in our society. Coaching in all it’s forms has become perhaps the greatest tool to assist with this trend.

Executive coaching is blending with strategic planning consulting, leadership development, change management consulting, project management, human resources (HR) services and outplacement and recruiting coaching. While initially executive coaching involved only senior management now it involves middle management.

To maintain high performance standards an executive needs to continue to improve his/her performance. These leaders performance directly impacts the effectiveness of the organization. The best companies use executive coaches to motivate, inspire, educate, and improve their effectiveness.

There are several areas in which coaching skills are utilized. At McKinney we focus on the following areas; executive coaching, executive career coaching, transformational leadership coaching, cross-cultural coaching.

 

Executive coaching

CEO’s and senior executives come under a great come under a great deal of pressure to perform with usually little to know support. CEO’s and their executive team are scrutinized perhaps more now than ever in history.

Statistics show that that 30 to 40% of these resign or are fired, or “under-perform” within a year or two of being hired. Many demands are placed on them and often they are not equipped to handle all of the demands placed upon them.

Leadership development coaching is taken up by selected senior executives and management teams. Some times the focus is to
target new hires transition or leaders being groomed for promotion,
new positions,
developing and communicating strategic vision,
strategic planning,
culture change,
leading executive teams,
interpersonal skills such as communication
and dealing effectively with colleagues and with power.

 

The benefits of executive coaching are increasing the chances of success and decreasing or preventing failures within the three major factors that catch senior management off guard;

1) A failure to build partnerships and teamwork with the executive team and subordinates.
2) Confusion about roles and expectations.
3) And lack of political savvy or insight.

 

Transformational Leadership

Some leaders believe that self-awareness is a “soft-skill” and is unimportant. However, research has proven that understanding one’s strengths, weaknesses, and behavior patterns as well as how they handle stress, frustrations and adversity are critical for great leadership.

Coaching leaders for transformational change involves changes the way they think. It also includes improving their ability to be creative and to re-look at things from a different perspective.

No longer is there such a thing as life-time employment but rather each individual is accountable for their own career development. Career development is a key tool that organizations can use to retain top talent. By implementing internal coaching programs most often conducted by external coaches turn over can be reduced and morale increased.

 

The benefits of executive career coaching are;

3) Partnerships within the organization formed with peers and subordinates,

Cross-cultural coaching

Success in multinational companies requires in-depth knowledge of other people’s cultural values, beliefs and management styles. Cross-cultural coaching is not limited to individuals transferring to another country but to all employees.

As a member of an international team it is mandatory that you get to know the other culture in which you are doing business with. Verbal and non-verbal cues can make or break a deal.

At the beginning of working in a new culture it is necessary to understand the stages of acclimatization that one goes through. First there is;

a) The honeymoon stage,
b) Then culture shock,
c) Internal adjustment,
d) Isolation,
e) Acceptance and integration.
f) Individuals learn how to cope with each challenge each step of the process.

 

The benefits of cross-cultural coaching are;

1) Learning the differences that each cultural has.
2) Learning about the different stages of adapting to a cross-cultural situation are and how to deal with them.
3) Happiness and productivity in a new environment is the most obvious benefit.
